I'm IN the PC beta! and I've got it pre-ordered and waiting for another beta key to test it on PS3.

"Yep, it's still around.

Final Fantasy XIV has been the butt of many a joke ever since its launch and understandably so. But instead of ignoring the outcries from players and media alike, Square-Enix actually accepted that the pre-Beta version they released was a load of crap and proceeded to buckle down and overhaul the whole thing, the results of which have been made public today. On their official website The Lodestone, the development team has posted a huge amount of info regarding what they call Final Fantasy XIV 2.0, including future plans, artwork and lots of other stuff.

But one of the two most interesting bits of information is probably the announcement that the free trial period (which has been continuously extended due to the amount of suckage the game exhibited) will come "to a close between late November and early December 2011". So yes, they're finally going to charge players. But if they actually implement all the changes they announced, the game might actually be worth paying money for.

The other interesting piece of info that came from this announcement is the release date of the elusive PS3 version, which is tentatively planned to come out "between October and December of 2012". You kind of have to wonder if the game is even going to live this long.

If you're interested in where the game is going, head on over to the official homepage and grab yourself some PDFs. It sure is nice to see a developer put this much effort into a game, but the question remains...is it too late? Does anyone even care? What are your thoughts?

"Ever since its release, Final Fantasy XIV hasn't been much more than a joke. And even though Square-Enix struggled to make the game competitive, it just never really worked out the way they had hoped. Adding to the punchline is the fact that they're now going to reduce the amount of servers from 18 to 10.

According to The Lodestone, the 18 available words will be merged on March 27th so that only 10 different worlds will remain; the rest of the servers will be switched off. Players are of course able to keep their characters and items, so at least they didn't fail that hard this time.

Somebody needs to make a "How long before FFXIV dies?" website. That's all I'm gonna say.
"

"Update: The Lodestone reports that Square Enix had a change of heart thanks to fan feedback regarding the server migration. Due to everyone being so pissed off, the merger has been delayed until the process is reassessed. I have posted the direct quote below this update.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the wealth of feedback you have provided us with following the announcement made on February 9, 2012 (Thursday), regarding the World merge and character transfers. In order to ensure that the most desirable and effective outcome is achieved, we will be reassessing the method of the merger process. New details on the World merge will be made public as they become available in the Topics section of the Lodestone."
