Melodies swirling in my empty head,
Words of pain and hatred sticking to my tongue.
The music, so slow, breaks against my ear drums,
Resonant, warm, chilled, loud, soft...
My mood defined in terms of notes, measures, phrases.
Crescendo, staccato, forte...
Depending on the words, depending on the tone,
Defined on impulse by the thoughts floating around my head.

Monster
Through the broken carnage,
of torn bodies, and destroyed cars.
Tell mom I won't be coming home tonight.
I disobyed her rules, I threw away her advice.
Tonight I drove too fast,
Drank too much.
Dear Mom I'm sorry to let you down.
Blood makes its warm path down my face,
I don't feel it.
I don't feel anything.
I stand and stare at the carnage I caused.
In that instant I sobered.
Bodies amongst bodies,
are pulled from those vehicles.
Some battered, some broken,
Some dead, some dying,
Some injured, some okay.
Suddenly my broken arm,
and damaged head,
and aching leg,
Don't feel so bad anymore.
I look at my hands.
What have I done?
What have I caused?
Tell their mothers they won't be coming home tonight.
I've read the headlines.
Over and over
I read them.
Can't believe the monster they describe,
is me.
I'm the monster that children fear.
The kind they expect under the bed.
I'm the monster parents hate.
The monster that stole their child away.
