Windows 7
October 31, 2009, 9:16PM

So..
i have always hated windows and in turn microfail. but for once.
they got it right! (i know right? like is that is actually possible..???)

installed this 3 days ago and so far so good on my slow backup machine (dual core 2.66ghz,4gbs of ram 500gb hd and a 9800gtx)

Problems:
- could not find drivers online for my wifi card beforehand (but windows update found it when i put in the ethernet cable)
- used a hole 20gbs from fresh install (which isnt much by standards now days but compared to the 1.6gbs for xp...)

id like to plug the hole drag two windows next to each other n they clip to half a screen and the show desktop screen u can highligh the button and they go clear but its not amasing. the truely cool thing for me is the time taken to load shit.

i mean boot up times are less than halved (24 seconds for vista) and only 13 for windows 7. games frame rates have improved, and when i do things like plug in a usb stick it shows up almost instantly rather than 4/5 seconds later.

SO for once i have to admit microfail actually got a product right first try... (windows version ALL have had problems before on launch and for example failbox 360 and the red rings)

would i recommend it to a friend..? eeerm.. yes i would. would i pay the full asking price for it... NO not if i purchased vista i honestly feel like this should have been released as a free update to any of the suckers who bought vista

but if you have the spare cash (or utorrent heh) i would recommend you get this OS.

it is basically the love child of vista and xp. and i for one love it

Meh, they got it less wrong but that's about it.
It doesn't really say much when your biggest pro is "Well, it's better than Vista"
It's still a resource hogging monster.

I hear/read it -isn't- a resource hogging monster, which is the point. It's what Vista was meant to be but they managed to turn it into this gremlin that sits there munching on your CPU.

Pro is probably all anyone would ever need. Ultimate is going to be overkill unless you're on a corporate net. Which is annoying, because that's all anyone seems to be interested in on torrent. I'd rather just install Pro and skip some of the junk. Actually, I'd probably be happy with Premium.

I believe Premium has backup utilities, just not the extra stuff for backing up on a network.

CentOS for me. But Linux isn't always an option.

There's reasons you use Linux and reasons you use an MS OS. All my workstation junk runs on Windows, unfortunately, and I'm not going to go looking for a bunch of shit to replace it on Linux.

I use Linux to run servers.

Okay. So I installed Windows 7 Ultimate today and I've been running it for a couple of hours now.

My first impression is very good. The OS is very smooth and responsive and doesn't appear to be too resource intensive. Memory use at boot is something like 550MB.

I moved from XP SP3 and I'm running an Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) with 2 GB RAM.

I'm gonna pirate this shit in a couple days when I get my laptop back. I think to save hassle I'll just partition my hard drive, go a clean install on the new partition and then transfer my files over. Anything is better than VISTA.

The only thing I couldn't get to work was my webcam. Everything else seems fine.

One minor gripe is the way the taskbar works. Whereas before some applications made a different clickable task for each thing you were doing, they're all piled up now for each app. There is a neat "Aero" view which allows you to hover over any task and get a miniature window showing what it's doing.

For applications with multiple windows, you have to hover over the task and then choose which window you want, whereas before you could just click directly on it in the task bar.

So for instance, if I'm having an MSN convo and doing something else, each time the person messages me, I have to hover over the MSN task and then choose their conversation in the window that pops up. The interface is slick, but it's extra work for my mouse and I don't like that.

Re: Windows 7

Yeah, it has its advantages, I'll get used to it.

I should also add that I'm using a pretty nice video card: ATI Radeon HD 3850

That probably accounts for a lot of the performance I'm getting despite having a somewhat dated machine. Win 7 requires a pretty good card to handle the various Aero things and visual effects like the translucent window borders, etc. I was kind of iffy about using an OS that is resource intensive on graphics, but I'm really liking the look and feel of it.
