Updated IM Features
August 27, 2010, 1:56AM

by: eon

Two important features have been added to the IM system:

The ability to block other members from IM-ing you, and the ability to remove the IM bar completely from your screen.

Blocking a user from your IM is easy. Just block them the way you normally would by visiting their profile and clicking their 'Add [name] to your block list' link.

If you've already blocked someone and are still getting their IMs, you will need to un-block and then re-block them.

To remove the IM bar entirely, go into your control panel and find the link for IM Settings. Change 'IM' to 'Disable' and you're all set.

New IM System
August 23, 2010, 12:18AM

by: eon

You may have noticed the new Facebook-esque IM bar at the bottom of your pages. It does exactly what you'd think. If you click the "Who's Online" tab, you'll get a list of all of your friends who are online. Clicking on any of them will open up an IM conversation with them.

Currently, the "friend" system on this site is a little bit loose. That is, someone can add you to their friends list without permission, so "friendships" aren't necessarily mutual relationships. The effect this will have on the IM system is that people who have added you will be able to see your online status whether or not you've added them back.

I'm going to see how that aspect of it goes for a bit. If it doesn't work out, we're looking at a major overhaul of the friend system on this site, where all friend requests would have to be approved. Before we jump to that, let's give this a shot. Remember that you can always remove yourself from anyone's friends list by clicking the link from your profile which shows those who have friended you. And of course, if you have trouble with someone re-adding you, you can always block them.

For Andromeda members, this opens up an interesting new possibility. Andromeda invisibility operates separately from invisibility on the IM system. Therefore, it is possible for Andromeda members to be invisible to the site at large, but still visible and available to their friends for chat. Pretty neat.

(All members have the ability to go invisible on the IM system by clicking the little 'gear' icon to the far right of the tool bar and then clicking 'Invisible'. You should do this if you don't want to receive any IMs!)

This system has replaced the previous IM system by UserPlane. Frankly, good riddance!

So, guys, play around with this. Please comment me if you find any bugs, suspicious activity, or large piles of unattended cash.

And, as always,

Enjoy . . .

Andromeda Feature Update
August 12, 2010, 12:12AM

by: eon

The Andromeda list of recent profile visitors will now include the number of times each individual has visited the profile, thereby increasing the creepy, stalker-ish powers of Andromeda account holders.

The number of visits will only increase for any individual once per ten minutes. This way if someone visits your profile and clicks around for a bit, they won't run up a huge number of artificial "visits". (Either accidentally or on purpose!) This will make the count a more accurate reflection of unique visits.

Want to know more about Andromeda membership?

Enjoy...

AVChat replacing TinyChat.
July 30, 2010, 1:24PM

by: eon

I've replaced the previous chat (a TinyChat room) with our own in-house chat server (AVChat). There are some tradeoffs here, but overall, I'm liking AVChat much better and most seem to agree. We have it on a 30 day demo before I must make a purchase decision, so try it out and let me know what you think.

When playing with it, realize that all of the cam and chat windows can be moved around and re-sized any way you like. (To re-size, use the red tab on the corner of any window.) So if it looks a little messy when you first enter, don't let that deter you. A bit of playing around and you can have a nice display!

On the plus side, the new server doesn't have the same annoying character limit as TinyChat. I don't know about you guys, but it was intensely frustrating when I needed to type a message longer than like 64 characters. (Which happened frequently.) Also, there will be no random fuck-tards invading the room from the great internet abyss. Only registered DS users are allowed to enter the chat, so there will be no reason to have a password or anything like that. In addition, the chat is more tightly integrated with the site. Users are displayed with their DS icon and link back to DS profiles. There are also a few other nice features in AVChat that were not present in TinyChat. (Like inline display of images and YouTube videos!)

The only real negative I see is that it's hosted on our own bandwidth, so I've had to impose some sensible limitations. Namely, you'll only be able to view a maximum of 4 cameras at a time. Of course, you can close / open any cams you like, allowing you to watch the 4 people of your choice. I don't see this as a huge drawback, as opening more than 4 windows tends to hog up screen space anyway and really, do we need to watch 8 people simultaneously? ;)

Having said that, I may eventually allow additional cam views to Andromeda members. I need to watch the bandwidth utilization for a while first, though.

Hope you guys enjoy it.

Chat Room Password
July 17, 2010, 4:37PM

by: eon

Because of trouble from no-good-so-and-sos, the chat room is now password protected.

Password: dschat

This will hopefully keep random people from the tinychat site from jumping in and causing so much trouble.

For now, this will cause the main chat entrance page to always report that there are zero people in chat. Just ignore it and go ahead and enter the room to find out for sure.

I'll be back in a few days to evaluate everything further and fix the splash page if possibe.

Later!

New Chat
June 30, 2010, 8:37PM

by: eon

After chat being non-existent for a while, I figured it might be a good idea to do something about it!

Nothing super crazy, but it looks like a neat little chat. All of the chat links on site now link to a Tinychat room. It's kinda cool because you can log in using your facebook or twitter login and use your mic / cam.

Give it a try. If there is enough interest, I'll appoint some moderators as well.

Green Day?
March 17, 2010, 10:46AM

by: eon

I believe I'll go out for a drive and run over anyone wearing green. Pinching is weak, I came to play, son.

(Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. Be safe, especially if you're drinking the green beer!)

New Comment Notifications by Email
October 2, 2009, 10:10PM

by: eon

A new feature has been added which will make it a little easier to keep track of your DS account without having to log in: Comment notifications by email. Here's the skinny on how it works:

If you have logged out or have been idle for more than 15 minutes and receive a new comment on DS, an email will be sent to your registered email address letting you know about it.

You will only receive emails about individual comments sent directly to you. This means you won't be pestered about things like broadcast messages, group invites, etc..

As a measure against potential abuse (or just too much email), no more than one email will be sent to you per 30 minute period. Extra emails will just be dropped (they won't queue up or anything like that).

Each email you receive will give you an updated list of all members who have sent you unread comments.

This behavior is enabled by default. However, if you do not wish to receive email notices, it is easy to disable. Just go to your Control Panel and then scroll down the page to the 'Email Notices' section. Change the setting to 'Off' and you won't be sent any more notices.

I hope you find this useful and . . .

Enjoy.

New Site Theme
August 18, 2009, 1:38PM

by: eon

Thanks to a.better.kiss for our first original site theme, "Grey Deco". To try it out, go to 'Control Panel' and on the 'Edit Profile' page look under the 'Site Theme' selections for 'Grey Deco'.

If you decide to use it, be sure and drop by a.better.kiss's profile and say thanks.

If you'd like to design your own site theme, see the previous news post!
